We’ll need to try the turbo-4 standard before we are able to respond to it, but in the past the Highlander is an excellent performer thanks to its powerful powertrain options, spacious interior reliable, and overall value, especially on the mid- and base models. A bronze trim kit along with an XSE model that rides on 20-inch black wheels add energy in the 3-row vehicle but it’s its lack in sliding doors which makes it different from the Sienna minivan.

The major change for 2023 will be beneath the hood that is creased and just behind the tie-clip logo that is affixed to the grilles. The gasoline models of this three-row vehicle will have an 2.4-liter turbo-4 engine instead of the old 3.5-liter V-6. The forced induction engine produces 265 horsepower and 309 lb-ft of torque, which is compared to 295 hp , but just 263 lb-ft for the smooth , but old V-6. Like the previous V-6 the turbo-4 is able to haul up to 5,000 pounds. However, the estimated fuel efficiency is the same as that of the V-6 with front-wheel drive models, which is 24 mpg when combined. Toyota says that the turbo-4 generates 50 percent less nitrous oxide, and lowers carbon dioxide emissions by 50% compared with the V-6. The turbo-4 that comes with an eight-speed auto transmission is also featured in the new 2022 Lexus NX 350, which is lighter, smaller and seats only five. We’ll update this review with driving impressions as soon when we’ve had the chance to test the updated Highlander.

In terms of efficiency, it’s difficult to beat with the Highlander Hybrid and its 35-mpg combined rating when using AWD as well as its 36-mpg combined ratings with FWD. It’s better than most minivans and other SUVs with eight seats with no plug.

The similar Sienna and its standard hybrid powertrain perform better in a family manner however the Highlander has enough room for eight passengers on twin rear bench seats , or seven people with Captain’s chairs in the middle. The third row’s access to seats is restricted to second-row seat levers that are push-and pull and two children could fit into the wayback, however adding a third row will make even the tiniest of car pools a long time. The third row behind the Highlander provides 16.0 cubic feet. However with the rows folded flat it expands an additional 84 square feet of space to take on most weekend projects that do not require transporting children here, there and back.

Toyota offers the family car with driver assist features like automated emergency braking, pedestrian detection active lane control, the adaptive cruise controller, automated high beams. Additionally, all models except the base L include blind-spot monitors. The Highlander is a regular Top Safety Pick+ winner from the IIHS The Highlander also has five stars NHTSA rating.
