The upcoming 2023 Toyota Sequoia has been designed to share similar powertrain and platform as the Tundra. It’s not a surprise that they will have similar release date, considering that they are sharing similar platforms and things alike. In the overall manner, Toyota is planning on a new and fresh 3-row SUV with V6 twin-turbo unit.
The Upcoming Plan
Toyota plans on releasing the third gen of Sequoia as a full-size SUV for their 2023 model. But before that, they are going to introduce their new Tundra 2022 pickup first. Although Toyota hasn’t gone into the details about their pickup variants, they provide just enough information and updates related to the ride. The engine would be using the V6 twin-turbo unit and the SUV would have better interior. Hopefully, Toyota will reveal its new 2023 Sequoia before 2022 ends, so we should know the details about the SUV before the sales period takes place.
Design and Construction
Toyota has planned that all of their new trucks would be using the body on frame TNGA-F platform, which is the same one used by Land Cruiser 300-series that has just been revealed. Tundra and Land Cruiser are coming with solid rear axle, but the setup for Sequoia would be slightly different. The new 2023 Toyota Sequoia would come with (independent) rear suspension, which is quite typical and common for 3-row SUVs.
It’s highly likely that American auto market won’t get the latest Land Cruiser, although it’s possible that its upmarket ‘cousin’, Lexus LX, will be. It also means that the new Sequoia will replace Land Cruiser for Toyota’s SUV lineup in the US. There have been several teaser images on the net; so that auto enthusiasts know what the design and physical appearance of the SUV. It’s actually based on the TRD Pro 2022 offroad Tundra model. The differences are quite obvious; seen from the grilles and headlights. However, many auto enthusiasts say that you should expect the grille design on Sequoia to be less dramatic than those on the new Tundra.
Powertrain and Performance
Sequoia is now using the V8 unit that is delivering 381 hp, but for the upcoming 2023 Toyota Sequoia would be likely using the V6 twin-turbocharged engine with 3.4 liter capacity; the same unit that is responsible for powering the upcoming Tundra. The new unit is inspired by the Land Cruiser, and it is said to produce 409 hp and 479 Nm of torque on the Cruiser. Will Sequoia have a hybrid power? It’s possible, as Tundra is planning on the hybrid unit with six cylinder engine. Every powertrain unit would be accompanied by auto 10 speed transmission, with both four and rear wheel driving system.
The Interior Cabin
Although not all, Toyota has revealed some of the details on the new Tundra, including the interior cabin. It will have a bigger touchscreen display (set as center-mounted piece) with impressive sound system from JBL and Apple CarPlay capabilities. Expect to find similar techs and ports in Sequoia. Basically, the new cabin will experience huge improvements when compared to the current Sequoia, which has been considered outdated. The current one has (smaller) touchscreen display with 7.0 inch in size.
These improvements should help Sequoia deal with tough competition of other 3-row SUV, and those with advanced tech-filled interior. Ford with its Expedition, for instance, comes with new infotainment techs while Chevy with its Tahoe even comes with 10.2 inch touchscreen display. On Tundra’s teaser image, there is wireless charging available, which means that you can expect the same thing on Sequoia.
So, if you are curious about the Sequoia, you should wait until Toyota debuts its 2022 Tundra, and then you can get the full details. It’s possible that the 2023 Toyota Sequoia would be ready by the end of 2022 after Tundra.
